The City of Paducah says South 5th Street will close to vehicles between Washington and Clark streets on Monday, November 2, while crews paint a commemorative veterans crosswalk in front of City Hall. The closure is scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

According to the city, the crosswalk will connect City Hall to Dolly McNutt Memorial Plaza. Its design will include red, white and blue, the words “Gone But Not Forgotten” and an image of a kneeling soldier.

The city says Mayor George Bray initiated the project and met with local veterans groups to determine the crosswalk’s colors and imagery. Bray said Paducah and McCracken County have almost 4,000 veteran residents and described the crosswalk as a lasting reminder of their service and sacrifice.

Surface Construction will paint the crosswalk, and the roadway is expected to reopen during the evening on November 2 after the work is complete, according to the city. People visiting City Hall during the closure can use streetside parking on Washington and Clark streets or the public lot on Clark Street next to City Hall.

The city says an interpretive panel explaining the crosswalk imagery will be unveiled at the Veterans Day opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 11. The Veterans Day Parade is scheduled to follow at 11 a.m.

Dolly McNutt Memorial Plaza covers one city block and features four memorials honoring veterans of World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Global War on Terrorism, according to the announcement.
