Murray State University said its Department of Music was represented at the Paducah Symphony Orchestra’s season-opening concert on Sept. 19 in Paducah, with a Murray State alumna, faculty members and students participating.

The concert’s first half included Gioachino Rossini’s “Overture to La Gazza Ladra,” Christopher Lowry’s “A Cypress Prelude” and Johannes Brahms’ “Alto Rhapsody,” according to the university. After intermission, the orchestra performed Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 4 in F Minor,” the announcement said.

Mezzo-soprano Audrianna Hughes, a Paducah native and 2022 Murray State graduate, was the featured soloist for the Brahms work, the university said. Hughes told the university that performing on a stage where she had sung as a high school student and with Murray State’s Concert Choir was a “dream come true.”

The announcement said associate professor of horn Ashley Cumming arranged a master class at Murray State that semester, and Sahawneh’s path to the substitute position began there.

The announcement did not provide ticket prices, a venue address or contact information.
